Replacing a railing in between two rooms

Question:  My dinning room is about28 inches higher than my family room and they are currently separated by a metal railing. I was considering replacing the meat rail with a set on counter with granite counter tops. Is this a wise remodeling venture?

Jake's Answer:   I assume you are replacing the railing with a cabinet like piece with a granite top.  I could see it working, if you have the room in the dining room for the cabinet.  You should maintain at least 2'6" from the edge of the table to a wall or cabinet.  This allows for someone to walk behind the person seated or the person seated can easily slide out from under the table.
