New tops and tile backsplash

I am having granite counter tops installed; One wall over the new tops has older ceramic tile; If the installers during removal of the laminate / tops break or crack any of the bottom row of those tiles, can I completely re-tile with new tile over the old with new tile for a new back splash. Or do I have to remove all the old tile -- which I don't want to do because of the hard work.

Larry,

Unless you have a lot of wall space, like over 40 feet, I would suggest you remove all the tile on the back splash and install new tile.  Installing new tile over existing tile can be a little tricky.  By removing the existing tile, you may damage the wall board behind the tile to the point you will have to replace the wall board as well.  It is wise of you to consider this now since there is a possibility that the wall tile may be damaged and it is a good idea to have a contingency plan in place.  Another solution could be to have a 4" piece of the granite cut and install this as a 4" high back splash on the counter top and over the existing tile.   Good luck and good remodeling to you.  Jake
