Decorating a vent pipe

Question:  I have a corner fireplace that was faced with a floor to ceiling wall. Roof leaks around the vent caused damage behind the wall and resulted in moisture issues. I removed the wall and would like to keep it open. I have seen free standing fireplaces but mine has the vent going up through the ceiling. Any suggestions as to how I could build a cabinet around the fireplace unit and decorate the vent pipe? I could do the wall behind it in any materials to match.

Jake's Answer:  So now you have the vent pipe exposed and would like to keep it that way.  No problem.  You could paint the pipe, but be aware, this pipe could get very hot when in use and the paint may burn off.  Be certain to use heat resistant paint when doing so.   Make sure to keep the cabinets you build safely away from the fireplace.  The manufacturers of these units should provide you with the clearance information.
