Fireplace update

I want to cover up a brick wood burning fireplace with tile or stone, but the fireplace has a fan/vent system that pushes air out right about the fireplace opening.  Can I cover up this vent area?  The reason I would like to cover it up is to reduce the fireplace in size.

Craig,

Probably not a good idea to cover up the vent.  I assume this is a factory built unit and to tamper with it could void warranties and could be a fire hazard.  Most of these units carry a UL rating based upon the way the unit is built.  When you change it, the rating could be null and void.  Just something to think about.  If it is not a factory built unit, I would consult a mason or fireplace technician who could advise you if the vent could be covered over.
